NAPSTER vs. RIAA:
1.Napster was a peer-to-peer file-sharing platform founded by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker in 1999. It allowed users to share and download music files freely over the internet. However, the majority of these files were copyrighted songs, leading to widespread music pirority.
2.In December 1999, several major record labels, represented by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), filed a lawsuit against Napster for copyright infringement. The plaintiffs argued that Napster facilitated and encouraged the illegal sharing of copyrighted music, resulting in substantial financial losses for artists and record complaints.
3.The legal battle between Napster and the RIAA unfolded over several years. In 2000, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction ordering Napster to remove copyrighted material from its platform. Despite Napster's attempts to implement filtering mechanisms, the court found that the company was unable to prevent copyright infringement effectively.
4.In 2001, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the lower court's decision, ruling that Napster's file-sharing service knowingly facilitated copyright infringement. As a result, Napster was ordered to shut down its service, marking a significant victory for the recording industry .
